How to defeat Self-Centeredness
Walking the extra mile
The Holy Spirit is leading us to repent from the prevalent self-centeredness in our day and age. Let us bring this subject to the Altar of Prayer so we can experience a powerful anointing when praying about this subject and it seems to me that if the snake is defeated, we can all experience a Powerful Breakout of the Kingdom of Heaven into our lives, families, ministries, cities and nations.
The Dictionary Definition of Self- Centeredness
- concerned solely or chiefly with one’s own interests, welfare, etc; engrossed in self; selfish; egotistical.
- Independent, self- sufficient.
- Centered in oneself or itself.
- Archaic. fixed; unchanging.
From Merriam Webster
- Independent of outside force or influence: self- sufficient
- concerned solely with one’s own desires, needs, or interests
Most of the time a self-centered person is preoccupied with one’s self, one’s life, one’s problems, one’s desires, one’s feelings. They take centre stage and manipulate the atmosphere and the environment to cater for their needs and desires. A spouse that is self-centeredness will not be aware of the needs of her spouse or children. If you have a self-centered worker, he or she will only do the minimum required, complain about how tired they are and moan about what they are asked to do. You cannot expect them to take any initiative to improved your business or ministry, especially if it will take sacrifice on their part. They will take minimum responsibility or will be afraid of responsibility altogether.
For people will be lovers of self, lovers of money, boastful, arrogant, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, ungrateful, unholy. 2 Timothy 3:2
Walk the Extra Mile!
Yeshua admonished us to ‘‘walk the extra mile,’‘ even at the expense of our own wellbeing, to spare the hardship of someone else. Walking the extra mile rescues us from one of the main traits of self- centeredness, that of self-preservation!
The expression ” the extra mile” refers to acts of service for others that go beyond what is required or expected. The expression comes from the bible, when Yeshua declares this in His Sermon on the mount,
” Whoever forces you to go one mile, go with him two. ” Mathew 5:41 NASB
The verse is a reference to the practice of ”impressment” which, among other things, allowed a Roman soldier to conscript a Jewish native to carry his equipment for one Roman mile (milion = 1,000 paces, about 1611 yards or 1473 metres)- no easy task, considering a Roman soldier’s backpack could outweigh upwards of 100 pounds (45.4 kg). The editors of New Oxford Annotated Study Bible have suggested that going the second mile would perhaps spare another from such compulsion. (Wikipedia)
Walk the extra mile in your job or ministry and you will become a leader!
For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake will find it. Mathew 16:25
Self-Centered people are very tiring because they are constantly drawing attention to themselves. They are an attention ”junkie”, and very often it is negative attention.
The American, and in general Western Society, is very self- centered. I recently read that in one American company the people were required to say to themselves ” I am beautiful” 100 times before going to work. In Japan, however, a company required the workers to say to other workers ”You are beautiful”.
Most of the American Society, is consumed with its own happiness, self- image and greatness, especially the generation that is now in their 30s who were raised without the Bible and Ten Commandments or prayer. They have been raised to pursue their own happiness and they never attain it. It is not attained, because they do not follow the Biblical Principles which show the true way to obtain JOY and that is through sacrifice and self-denial.
I urge you therefore, brothers and sisters, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice – holy, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service. Do not be conformed to this world but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may discern what is the will of God- what is good and acceptable and perfect. Romans 12:1, 2
Faithfullness brings Joy and Promotion!
Today’s generation wants to advance their careers more that they want to be faithfull at their jobs. They pursue money and position rather than faithfulness. They move from job to job to ” advance” without giving a thought of how much harm this causes in their work place or to their bosses and how much instability they bring. They want to be self- fulfilled more than they want to give themselves to a cause for the sake of God or others! True promotion comes from YAH! And He only promotes the FAITHFUL! It may take more time, but it will be RIGHT and HEALTHY!
His master said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant! You were faithful with a little, so I’ll put in charge of much. Enter into your master’s joy!’ Mathew 25:21
Losing your soul
Self-centeredness leads to self-destruction and that is the reason why there is so much depression and suicide during this day and age.
This is why abortions have murdered more people that any of the World Wars! The self-centerdness of a promiscuous, immoral society tells woman that they are the ” owners” of their bodies and therefore, have ”the rights” to murder their babies in their womb if the pregnancy is ”undesired”. Millions of women are walking around with the Spirit of Death in their wombs because of SELF-CENTEREDNESS and millions of men are accomplices to this terrible crime! This spirit of Death occurs especially in Western Countries.
There is less depression, suicide and abortions in countries where the young people need to provide and fight for the wellbeing of their families. In Africa, they sometimes walk many miles to bring water from a faraway well, they give up their next meal for their younger siblings and sleep on the floor.
Hardship never killed anyone but self-centeredness is a killer and corrupter in society!
Return to Love and Sacrifice
Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends. You are My friends if you do whatever I command you. John 15:13,14
Self-centeredness is the opposite of Yeshua’s character and teaching. It is the opposite of Daniel, Jeremiah, Esther and Ruth’s lifestyle and if there is no repentance and returning to the basics of unconditional love, self-denial and giving of one’s self, the only thing we can expect is self- destruction like what happened in the hedonistic societies of Ancient Greece and Rome where MAN was in the centre and not the CREATOR of MAN.
There is nothing wrong with one’s self, but what is the VISION behind it? Is it our own happiness or is it so that we can fulfil the Will of the Creator and give our lives for a Higher Cause and for the sake of others? I want to be healthy and well, don’t you? But let the purpose be higher than ”our own wellbeing.” It reminds me of what the flight attendants say prior to take off: ”Buckle yourself first, then buckle your child or your dependent.” Yes buckle yourself”’, but seek the wellbeing of OTHERS! Yes! Stay healthy, but invest your energy in doing the WILL of Yah and bring LIFE to others.
We are not called to pursue a ”career” or our own happiness and to be successful at it. We are called to PURSUE THE KINGDOM of ADONAI and all these ”other things” shall be added unto us.
For the pagans eagerly pursue all these things; yet your Father in heaven knows that you need all these. But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you. Mathew 6:32-33
Repent from self-centeredness for the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand!
